What is the "Black History Liberation Bowl" (aka: "LIB Bowl")???
The "LIB Bowl" is an (8-10) week Black history education and scholarship program (December through February) that utilizes academic competiton as a tool of liberation. Open to youth, (ages: 10-25), the program extends invitations to schools, churches, community organizations, and independent groups to form teams of (3-8) participants for this transformative educational journey.
Students and Coaches are provided a comprehensive (60) page Fact-Checked Study Guide that serves as a roadmap; tracing global Black journey from: Birth-place of Humankind & Cradle of Civilization in Afrika, to conclude with critical examination of "State of Black America" (2025).

Divided into (13) Units of Study, containing: (12) pages of Time-lines, (140) Faces to Recognize, and (400+) Questions & Answers; the "LIB Bowl" Study Guide: provides accurate and relevant information to counter false narratives. This source, along with supplemental materials shared via our social media platform, fill knowledge gaps & equips learner with verified facts to build deeper understanding of Black global impact.

Birthed in 1995, at the historic: Louisville Central High School, in Louisville, KY, by Ricardo X, with the financial & moral support of the late Principal Harold Fenderson, the "LIB Bowl" thrived for (11) years. The program stood as a beacon of knowledge, pride, and excellence in our community; and a testament to what's possible when educators believe in the power of cultural knowledge.
The "LIB Bowl" dominated the landscape of academic competition, challenging young minds and providing youth a platform to showcase their knowledge of Black History, and take pride in their heritage.
Then, for reasons both practical & personal, the program went dormant in 2006. Now, after (20) years, it returns in response to efforts, to "Erase Black People from the Pages of History." The "Re-Birth" of the "LIB Bowl"

Today, we face a troubling reality: deliberate efforts to white-wash Black contributions, silence the voices of our ancestors; and deny next generation their rightful inheritance of knowledge & pride. In response to these attempts to distort & diminish our story; the visionary storyteller (griot-warrior) Lamont Collins, Founder & CEO of "ROOTS 101: African-American Museum," proposed a collaboration with: "X-TEXT Enterprizes," to "Bring-Back" the "LIB Bowl," as an integral component of "Black History Month" - not to simply compete, but to reclaim, remember & resist.

This "Rebirth" is a Spiritual Journey. The primary focus of the "LIB Bowl," centers the words and deeds of Black freedom fighters, who risked everything, so that we might be free. Their words and deeds, will serve as preludes to some of the questions asked; creating context that makes questions more meaningful, and ensures that questions asked & answers sought, move in positive directions.
Why Return After 20 Years?
Because our History is under siege, and silence in face of erasure, is complicity. Black youth need a space where "Black History" isn't optional, or up for debate — it's Celebrated! Effective educators understand that when Black youth learn of the brilliance & resistance of their ancestors, something shifts -they see & carry themselves differently, and approach the world with newfound purpose.

The "LIB Bowl" is a rigorous educational experience that develops critical thinking skills alongside historical knowledge. Students don't just memorize facts; they analyze sources, debate interpret-rations, and connect past struggles to present-day movements. They examine how Freedom-Fighters accessed circumstances, developed tactics, built coalitions and made decisions under pressure.

The tournmament - as exciting as it is - serves as the celebration of all this Icamning students have acquired; after spending weeks immersed in rigorous study, diving deep into the lives, struggles and trumps of Black Freedom-Fighters and the organizations they built. Weeks of study come alive in competition; when knowledge becomes performance, and students demonstrate publicly, what they have internalized. Scholars testify to the power of knowing who they are, and where they are from.

Whereas, teams compete & champions are crowned; the real victory happens in those (8-10) weeks of transformation, when students develop knowledge to understand that Black History isn't something separate from their lives - it is their lives, their inheritance and their power. The real victory is measured, in how students carry this knowledge forward, for the rest of their lives.

A Legacy That Lives On:

We are very proud of our !" "Harvest of Famers" (students who participated in "LIB Bowl" from 1995-2006). They blazed trails that continues to light the way. They walked "the yards" of: FAMU, TSU, Spelman, Morehouse, Fisk, Xavier, U of L, UK, Michigan, Temple, Harvard etc; & emerged as: educators, attorneys, community activist, social workers, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, etc. Most credit "LIB Bowl" with help shaping much of what they know, and who they've become.

Now, some of these former participants return - not as competitors, but as mentors, supporters, and advocates. They are committed to sowing seeds for 2ªd "Harvest of Famers," ensuring that a new generation experiences the transformation, as they did. Some volunteer as coaches, moderators, and judges, etc. Others may be contributing financially or recruiting teams from their own schools and organizations. They understand firsthand: "LIB Bowl" doesn't just teach history - it Changes Lives.
